Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) is a native plant of South Asian countries. It is an herb which has long been used in the traditional Chinese medicine and Indian medicine system, Ayurveda. In Vietnam, this herb was considered a “panacea” in the 1980s.
Andrographis has many anti-microbial effects (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites), anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant properties. Traditionally, Andrographis is used to treat liver diseases, fever, cancer, diabetes, etc. This bitter-tasting herb is rich in compounds known as Andrographolide. In Thailand and India, Andrographolide has been proved to have a potential antiviral effect in the treatment of COVID-19. It can also reduce the level of inflammation, improve respiratory symptoms, suppress the virus, and improve the body’s immunity.
As the consumers are now more interested in their well-being, many brands are seeking opportunities to deliver healthy beverage options that incorporate functional ingredients. The demands for functional beverages have grown; therefore, new products are expected to be more diverse.
